When I used to do foster and rescue every time I left the horse I was fostering (until she was back to a 5 on the body scale, she was originally a 1!) then it was goodbye, because I didn't know when she might decide it was time. Thankfully, she made it through, and passed two years after she was adopted due to age (25+). So I definitely understand your worries.
