He's been barefoot for 3 years, with different trimmers though. He's ALWAYS had a super long toe, and with my new trimmer we're working on getting it back to normal-ish. Of course it's a long process, especially on a 23 y.o.! He does, however, have a reasonably tight white line and fairly decent frogs, and he's quite sound on all but the rockiest ground. Funny how a hoof that doesn't look like it should do that well does, eh?

Andrea, it could be the soy in TCL, you might be right. Or maybe he's deficient in something or many things... so frustrating! Time to do another feed analysis and go bang my head on the wall some more...jenjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01737679332792618499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3204283740895921092.post-35485809617019034712011-10-24T06:41:25.498-05:002011-10-24T06:41:25.498-05:00I still think he might need more vits/mins/protein...I still think he might need more vits/mins/protein! Or go crazy and pull him off the TC Lite and go totally, totally soy free and see what happens - maybe even a negligible amount makes him sore.Andreahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15902291220984883182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3204283740895921092.post-75503348566911972232011-10-24T00:06:56.871-05:002011-10-24T00:06:56.871-05:00I try to trim my horse's feet every other week...I try to trim my horse's feet every other week or so (basically using just the rasp), but I let it drag out to 5 weeks recently. When I went to take care of them I found lines in the distorted/flared area. They weren't there when the hoof was growing out - I speculate that the flaring process 'brought them out'. Or exagerrated a previously invisible line.

Your courteous emailer was right that the hooves don't look so hot. That white hoof is a little scary as well, truth be told.

I would recommend having a look & watching some of the vids here (particularly the last one): http://www.e-hoofcare.com/categories/information/video.html There is not just "one correct trim" (aka no one source is gospel) but I have been using their methods for assessing hooves with success.

If you are brave, post pics of your horse's feet on the Horseshoes.com forum. You may get a few different views on treatment but there is wisdom to be had.Laurenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03210666857862017395noreply@blogger.com
