BREGO.
Yes, that Brego. The one he rode fox hunting up in New Hampshire about a month ago? That wasn't quite the innocent ride I made it out to be... we were actually trying him out to see if he and hubby were a match. Turns out, they got along FABULOUSLY well, and Brego's mum was happy with the idea of him having a job again. I'll have to post more pics/videos of the tryout ('cause Brego seeing armor for the first time was ADORABLE), but for now, here are his arrival pics!
The Brook Ledge van turning onto our street. These guys are awesome - if you need a horse shipped, I highly recommend them!
Herro!
Hubby leads Brego to his new home.
Brego came off the trailer looking like he'd just stepped on - totally fine, hydrated, and 100% ready to go. I'm not sure what Brook Ledge does to keep horses in such good condition on such long trips, but whatever it is, it works!
Brego settled right in. First, a good roll in the dirt. Don't you just want to rub his belly???
Next, sniff the poop.
Meet the neighbors... Cash, Red, and Taran in the far back. There were several kerfluffles between Taran and Brego over the gate, but you know what they say about fences making good neighbors.
It's also important to stand in the water trough. Apparently this is a thing Brego likes to do when he's hot, lol! We may need a bigger water trough...
And then settling in to a full hay net. Hubby for size comparison.
Paddy stayed up in the stall during the day to keep Brego company. They met a few times over the fence, and there were no dramatics. After Brego had had several hours to relax, drink half the water trough, and otherwise settle in, we decided to let them out together. And here's what happened:
BFFs already!
We are so, so grateful to Brego's mum Daun for suggesting the match in the first place, not to mention setting up the fox hunt and tryout weekend, and then graciously handling all the logistics it takes to ship a horse halfway across the country. Thank you SO MUCH, and please know that he will have the best home with us! Also, many thinks to MC for keeping a watch out for the horse van's arrival, watching over Brego's introductions to the herd while hubby and I tried to figure out why the electric fence wasn't working well, and of course, ALL THE PICTURES! And of course thanks to FuzzyPony for well... everything. ;)
Wow, he is a beast of a horse!
ReplyDeleteKika does the front feet in the water trough too - it's too funny! I haven't seen her do it in ages and sadly have never caught her on camera!!
Can't wait to see B all kitted out for jousting - the earth shall move to the pounding of his hooves!
He is quite large and in charge, but oh so kind and talented!
DeleteThe front feet in the water trough was hilarious, although we were a bit worried that he was going to try to get ALL his feet in, and then roll in it somehow... Not sure how to pry a water trough off a Brego, lol!
And yes, B is going to make a wonderful jousting horse, not to mention all his talents with fox hunting and eventing. We are so excited!
BREGO BREGO BREGO BREGO!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOH PS - use supermegacaution with the transfer to coastal. I know he's been here before and has eaten it before but it's a horse killer when they've been on northern hay for a long time.
Andrea, thanks for the warning. We are very slowly weaning him over to coastal, probably over the course of 2-3 weeks. He's been on it before since he used to live in Texas, but yeah, it's one you have to be careful with since it's not a stemmy hay at all.
DeleteAhhhh!!! He's absolutely gorgeous, congrats!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a handsome horse, congratulations to you and your hubby!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteWelcome Brego!! He looks like a jouster. Can't wait to see photos of the hubby in gear aboard the beast. (I went back and read some of his posts). Brego doesn't look too bad for being out of work for two years. Is he 13? Did I read that right?
ReplyDeleteKaren, he does look like a jouster doesn't he? But he's also an amazing jumper, with lots of miles of eventing and fox hunting under his belt. Quite the all-around talented guy! And he's 12... will be 13 in the spring.
DeleteCongratulations, he's such a cutie, and SO BIG! I can't wait to see pictures of him in armor!
ReplyDeleteHe's something like 16.3 and change, but he's also extra super wide. He makes everyone else here look like midgets!
DeleteHave a great life Brego :) The new place looks lovely! Look forward to following Brego's adventures on here!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Wiola! We're looking forward to a whole new set of adventures with him. :)
DeleteOh, heartfelt congratulations! I am so very happy for you!!! He looks like a wonderful horse!
ReplyDeleteHe and hubby are a great pair, and he's got so much experience. We're very, very lucky to have him!
DeleteBrego standing in the water trough is priceless! Congratulations to your husband on his new partner -- he's a beauty.
ReplyDeleteHaha yeah, we were really worried he's either a) break it, or b) tip it over. Neither... he daintily stepped out of it when he was done soaking his feets. Too funny!
DeleteOh I used to read about Brego all the time - how exciting to see him again! Congratulations in the new addition!
ReplyDeleteOn*
DeleteHis blog was one of the first big equestrian blogs, and I followed it religiously. We'll try to pick up where Daun left off!
DeleteAwesome and congrats!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great surprise!
ReplyDeleteI almost asked what the plan was for your hubby since Red was retiring. Brego is seriously massive and gorgeous. Will he be paddock mats with Paddy?
Haha, Val, I wondered if anyone would guess that our little foxhunting outing wasn't so little. He IS massive and gorgeous, SO well-trained and simply wonderful match for my husband. And yes, he and Paddy will be rooming together!
DeleteOMG YES!
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks Liz!
DeleteHandsome guy! I love the drafties, so excited to hear all about him!
ReplyDeleteHe is very handsome and he knows it :)
DeleteHe's lovely! Is he a Percheron?
ReplyDeleteYes, full Perch!
DeleteLucky! Some day I dream of having a Percheron.
Deleteomg congratulations!!!! Brego is such a beefcake! So glad you were able to find such an amazing new herd-member. he's got big shoes to fill, tho, and i'm excited to see how he does!
ReplyDeleteHe is most definitely a beefcake - it's all the working out he does! And yes, we are very lucky to be able to add Brego to our herd. As for the big shoes... he's got feet about the size of dinner plates, so it won't be hard for him to fill any shoes! Well, except that he's barefoot lol!
DeleteCongrats! How exciting!!!
ReplyDeleteWe are super thrilled to be his new home!
DeleteCONGRATULATIONS! Glad he made it in one piece!
ReplyDeletewhat a nice mean of transport and WHAT A HORSE!!! Congratulations, he looks fabulous :)
