Jousting: Hitting tip-to-tip

In short: Big jousting tournament this weekend and all our work with Brego paid off! He was a jousting STAR!!!!

I've got a ton of pics and videos which I'll post when I'm done processing them, but for now, I leave you with a sequence of shots where the jousters hit tips, which is very unusual.

See the tiny "poof" of the initial lance break just above the lances?

Hubby's lance is still on target for his opponent's shield.

Juuuuust about to hit...

... and the follow-through!

4 points for hubby and Brego, since they broke on their opponent's shield AND broke more than half of the lance tip!

  1. So interesting! How heavy is that armour?

    1. Depending on the person and the style of the armor, it weighs anywhere between about 50 and 80 pounds. Hubby's armor is on the lighter side, as he's using a heat-hardened stainless (410) and titanium chain mail. The armor is really serious business though - it absolutely does what it's supposed to and is not for decoration!

  2. Brego definitely looks like a star! Great job to him and hubby! Cant wait to hear more! (and the fear factor of a huge black horse to joust against has got to be a hit to the other guys confidence!!)

    1. You can't actually see your opponent's horse very well on the other side of the tilt, which actually makes it a bit safer. Plus there were a surprising number of big black horses there!

  5. This is so incredibly awesome.

Are the shattered lances (or parts of the lance?) expensive to replace? What kind of wood is it?

    1. The lances are two parts - the tip is made of scored balsa wood (scored so it's a progressive break, and also to reduce splintering), and the rest of the lance is turned poplar. Tips are about $2 each, the lances are about $200 each. We do break lances occasionally (usually at the handle), but it's pretty uncommon.
