Or we could go with Plan C: Take up golf

Last night I had my first lesson with Brego. I felt like a sack of potatoes, but overall it was pretty good, if exhausting. Trainer and I discussed plans moving forward, and I headed home like usual.

Then, coming off the trailer, Brego caught his toe (the one where the abscess on his coronet band blew out on in May and has been growing out since) on the ramp and ripped off a HUGE hunk.

Not surprisingly, he's now dead lame.

I should have put a tape measure on that, but it's about an inch of hoof missing.

See the laminae on the inside? Poor guy.

Since I'm so good at taking care of feet, I flushed with betadine, crammed some goo and themerasol in there, and stuffed it with gauze. What you can't see is that there's half a piece of gauze crammed under his toe too. In other words, he's going to lose the entire hoof wall below where the horizontal crack is (which is the original abscess line). 

That just looks painful.

Sooo... yeah. I'll be taking up golf. Or maybe crocheting. Or finger painting. Or I could just start on all those house projects I haven't gotten to.

Unless anybody has a horse they want me to lame ride?

    What a nasty - poor Brego!
    Wishing both boys a super speedy recovery! If you were closer I'd totes share my girls wih you. They could use a skilled rider Boot Camp!

      Sadly, growing out a hoof isn't a speedy process, and there's not much I can do to make it go faster. Same with rehabbing a soft tissue injury.

      Winter is actually the time when we get all our riding in, because it's too damn hot in the summer.

      That chunk of hoof was bound to split off sooner or later but we were hoping for later! Oh well :(

    Stampede had a similar chunk after an abscess but it didn't chip off until after the laminae had hardened underneath (vet had me putting betadine in the hole) so it just looked really ugly but didn't bother him with shoes on. I feel your pain though, I'm just finally nearing the final grow out of the worst abscess ever earlier this year.

    I hope Brego heals up faster than you think!

      Sadly brego and shoes don't mix well together so we just have to do the best we can without. Glad that stampys abscess is almost gone!

      That's definitely a bummer but it happens.

      I think I jinxed myself! Stampede looks like he might have an abscess in his left hind now. Argh!

    I'm so sorry! I'd send you Winn in a heartbeat because I have so little free time, but I can't guarantee he wouldn't rear up and I would feel terrible if he did. We have a pony horse that moves really nice, looks like a warmblood, that we aren't really using right now. I've shown him dressage once, but he doesn't have much training in it. He's still a fun horse to ride though. His only quirk is that he gets claustrophobic in fully enclosed indoors. I wish we lived close to eachother and you could ride any of mine that you wanted, if you wanted. I wouldn't blame you if you passed on Indy. ;)

    I frequently threaten to take up tennis ( which I suck at). Maybe we can play doubles. At least it's winter and not spring? Poor Brego.

    I had one do a similar job on his hoof. We put a shoe on until it grew down most of the way and he was back jumping after a week or so. Initially we expected him just to be fine for light riding with the shoe on, but he decided to show us that he was fine for more by taking himself for a hoon around a 50 acre paddock for 15 minutes and pulling up sound!

      Unfortunately brego does not do well with shoes, so we're stuck until his hoof grows out. I need a magic hoof-growing supplement!!!

    Holy freaking hell. Someone wants you to winter inside with a strong drink and a good book. Shake your first and declare NO!!!! You will be back in the saddle; I am sure of it.

    I would second the suggestion of working on house projects. At least, that way - you can be productive and you don't actually feel guilty about *not* riding... because, well... You can't.
